Chapter Twenty-Three

That’s Another Directive You’ve Breached…

‘That’s another directive you’ve breached!’ Captain Blandish yelled. ‘No unau-thorised beings, nonbeings, alien incursions, extradimensional spectres or intelligences to manifest themselves upon the bridges of authorised Federation vehicles…’

Daedalus groaned. ‘Enough, please, Captain. I haven’t come all this way to have you throw the book at me.’

‘Clear the bridge now,’ Blandish clipped. ‘Skeleton staff only.’

‘No one leaves,’ Daedalus roared.

‘Ehm…’ said the Doctor.

‘Yes, Doctor?’ asked Daedalus pleasantly.

‘You!’ shouted Garrett at the Doctor. ‘You’re working with him! You were his accomplice all along!’

‘That fits,’ growled Blandish. ‘It was only after the Doctor came aboard that we encountered the city, and –’

Daedalus waved his taloned fingers. ‘Alas, gentlemen, much as I would like to be able to say I have the Doctor in my employ, I would never make so bold. He’s a free agent, is the Doctor, and not one easily bought.’

‘Too right,’ nodded the Doctor.

‘Where is she?’ burst out Timon. ‘What have you done with my Belinda?’

‘Your Belinda, is it?’ said Daedalus. ‘Well, you’ll be pleased to hear that she’s currently hatching a rather tricky and hazardous plan. She has corrupted one of my people and they are at this very moment travelling down into the city of the Ghillighast in a rather misguided attempt at causing a revolution of some sort.’ Daedalus gave a terrifying chuckle. ‘Is your Belinda given to such acts?’

‘They’re doing what?’ said the Doctor hotly. ‘I never told them to…’

‘Now, now, Doctor,’ Daedalus smirked.

Blandish had become deadly serious. ‘What do you want with us?’

‘Simply to provoke you, Captain.’

‘What?’

The Doctor had started marching towards the elevator. Timon pulled out his blaster. ‘One step more and I shoot.’

‘Where do you think you’re going?’ demanded Blandish.

‘I’m going after Marn and Belinda,’ said the Doctor in a steely tone. ‘I don’t know what they think they’re doing, messing about with the Ghillighast. Now let me past.’

Back at the viewscreen, Daedalus was chuckling away to himself, enjoying all of this immensely.

‘You can’t fetch your TARDIS,’ said Garrett in an even tone.

‘And why not?’

‘Because it’s gone. While we were down there, in the City of Glass, it vanished.’

‘What?’

‘With your friends Compassion and Fitz inside it. I gather they got tired of waiting for you.’

The Doctor’s eyes blazed with anger and he swore profusely. ‘I’ve told them! I’ve told them again and again!’ Then he rounded on the captain. ‘This is your fault! If I’ve lost my ship and my friends for ever I’ll –’

There was a sudden shrill bleeping from Garrett’s work station.

‘Ah,’ said Daedalus with a broad wink as Garrett bent to examine his monitor. ‘Here is a piece of information I think we’ve all been waiting for.’

Garrett digested the data on his screen and spoke rapidly to his commander.

‘Sir, we can afford two reasonably large discharges of sonic energy at the city. Enough to disable it at any rate. We cannot destroy Valcea, but we might at least degrade its potential for utilising weapons of mass destruction.’

‘Ha!’ Blandish leapt out of his command chair. ‘See, Daedalus?
